"People have so many stereotypes of people from where I come from. If you say you're from Oklahoma, it'll be like, 'Oh, so you milk cows, feed chickens, ride bulls, all that stuff, right?' And it's like, 'No. We don't ride around in covered wagons, either.'" -Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood Lyrics Jesus Take the Wheel

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy with the baby in the backseat
Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It's been a long hard year
She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
She was going way to fast
Before she knew it she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even have time to cry
She was sooo scared
She threw her hands up in the air

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this all on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this all my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on

Oh, Jesus take the wheel
Oh, I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
From this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel
Oh, take it, take it from me
Oh, why, oh

"Jesus, Take The Wheel" is the first single from American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album, Some Hearts. The music video for it was originally slated for release on November 4, 2005 but was delayed and made available at a later date on Yahoo! Launch.

The song tells the story of a young mother who lives a hectic life. On her late-night drive on a snow-covered road, the woman begins sorting out her emotions and bemoans not having enough time to do the things that really matter. Then, her car hits a patch of black ice, causing the woman to lose control of her car. She panics and cries out the title line of the song; shortly thereafter, she is able to regain control of the car and bring it to a stop. After taking stock of the situation (and seeing that her baby has remained fast asleep in the rear seat), the woman vows to give her life to Christ.

On February 1, 2006 "Jesus, Take The Wheel" was certified Gold by the RIAA.

With six weeks at the pole position of the Billboard Country Singles chart, the song ties Faith Hill's "Breathe" as a runner-up for longest-running No. 1 by a solo female artist, a record held by Connie Smith. Smith's "Once A Day" had an eight-week run at No. 1 in 1964-65.

On March 2, 2006, Carrie Underwood went back to American Idol to perform her #1 hit single "Jesus, Take The Wheel".
