"People have so many stereotypes of people from where I come from. If you say you're from Oklahoma, it'll be like, 'Oh, so you milk cows, feed chickens, ride bulls, all that stuff, right?' And it's like, 'No. We don't ride around in covered wagons, either.'" -Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood Lyrics

A native of Checotah, Oklahoma, Carrie Underwood had an all-American upbringing, singing in her church choir, playing softball and getting good grades in school. But while studying mass communications at Northeastern State University, this pretty sorority girl decided to try out for the fourth edition of American Idol -- and went all the way to the top.

The title of "American Idol" couldn't have gone to a more deserving young woman. Carrie's talent is unquestioned, and with her win, she has been given a place in the spotlight that could jump-start a distinguished singing career in country music.

With her winning personality and graciousness, no one would begrudge Carrie her American Idol victory. Her down-to-earth attitude and independent nature will likely keep her well-earned, if rapid, rise to stardom from going to her head.
